Kurti rejects Northern Macedonian PM’s invitation to next Open Balkans summit

The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti has rejected the invitation of the Prime Minister of Northern Macedonia, Dimitar Kovacevski to participate in the Open Balkans Initiative, which is expected to be held in Ohrid, on June 7 and 8, 2022.

In Kurti’s letter to Prime Minister Kovacevski, he states that Kosovo is committed to the Berlin Process, which was approved by the six Western Balkan countries at the Sofia summit in 2020 and was fully supported by the European Union.

According to Kurti, Kosovo and Northern Macedonia should work together to prevent Serbia from promoting its Russian and Chinese interests in the region.

“Given the common values between our two countries, it is in our interest to work together to prevent Serbia from promoting its Russian and Chinese interests in our region, while constantly denying Kosovo’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, and blocking equal opportunities for the citizens of Kosovo “, wrote Kurti.

Kurti says common values and aspirations are achieved in the Common Regional Market, where states operate with the rules and values of the European Union.

Kosovo opposes the “Open Balkans” initiative, insisting that Kosovo should be represented as an equal, that is, as an independent state within any process, including the “Open Balkans” initiative.

The “Open Balkans” initiative is a continuation of the Balkan “mini-Schengen”, presented in Novi Sad, Serbia on October 10, 2019, by the leaders of Serbia, Northern Macedonia and Albania.
