Kosovo will apply for membership in the Council of Europe. Sources from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora of the Republic of Kosovo have confirmed for Radio Free Europe that the application is ready and that the application will be made soon, probably on Thursday.
The possibility of Kosovo applying for membership in the Council of Europe was mentioned by the President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic in Brussels on Wednesday, adding that with this, Kosovo is violating the Brussels and Washington Agreements.
Ahead of an informal dinner hosted by EU Foreign Minister Josep Borrell with the six Western Balkan leaders on Wednesday (May 11th), Vucic said “it is clear that some people are working to destabilize the entire region and Serbia.”
The Council of Europe is an international organization for human rights, democracy and the rule of law in Europe, based in Strasbourg.
The Council of Europe defends freedom of expression and the media, equality and the protection of minorities. The council has launched campaigns on issues such as child protection and the rights of the Roma, Europe’s largest minority. He has also campaigned for protection from hate speech online.
The Council of Europe helps member states fight corruption and terrorism and undertake the necessary judicial reforms.
Russia has recently been expelled from this organization.
The possibility of Kosovo’s accession to the Council of Europe was opened with the expulsion of Russia from this organization.
In the absence of Russia, two thirds of the member states of this organization recognize the independence of Kosovo. Given that decisions are not made by majority, the possibility of Kosovo’s accession is real.
