France, Germany and Poland call for visa liberalization for Kosovo

Share

France, Germany and Poland, through a joint statement, have called for progress in the visa liberalization process for Kosovo.

“We call for progress regarding visa liberalization for Kosovo. Our countries are strongly committed to the Berlin Process as an additional tool to promote regional cooperation and EU membership of the Western Balkan countries,” the September 16 statement said.

These three countries, known as the “Weimar Triangle”, also say that a comprehensive agreement between Kosovo and Serbia is necessary for the progress of the two countries.

“We fully support the EU-led Kosovo-Serbia dialogue and emphasize the need for a comprehensive agreement that allows Kosovo and Serbia to advance on their European paths and contribute to stability in the region,” the joint statement continues.

The countries have agreed on a tripartite visit to the Western Balkans.

Unlike all the countries of the Western Balkans, Kosovo is the only one that does not have visa liberalization with the EU.

Large reserves have been expressed earlier by France and the Netherlands.

Dozens of criteria have been imposed on Kosovo, including additional ones, which, according to the European Commission, have been met. However, since 2018, the EU states have not reached an agreement to enable Kosovars to move freely.

Currently, Kosovo only has a Stabilization-Association Agreement (SAA) with the EU, which is the only contractual agreement between the two countries.

This agreement is also the first step towards membership in the bloc.
