The European Union has once again reiterated its call to Kosovo and Serbia to refrain from actions in the coming days, which could lead to an escalation of the situation, and that the European bloc with its partners is intensively continuing the work to find a solution to the issue of plates.
This is what Peter Stano, EU spokesperson for foreign affairs and security, told the media.
“Several times in the past we have said that it is extremely important to prevent any tension, which could lead to the escalation of the situation. What Serbia and Kosovo need the least at this moment is more tension. They need more progress in order to move the dialogue forward. As we have said, [they] must work towards a comprehensive agreement in the dialogue for the normalization of relations. We are working with our partners, not only us as the EU, but also other partners, as well as with the authorities of Kosovo and Serbia in order to prevent any spark of escalation of the situation”, Stano said on October 27.
This position of the EU comes a few hours after Lista Serbe – the main party of the Serbs in Kosovo – and Serbia warned of setting up barricades, if Kosovo, after October 31, will confiscate license plates or cars of Serbs.
The Government of Kosovo has said that from September 1 to October 31, Serbian citizens who have cars with license plates issued by Serbia – which Pristina considers illegal – must convert them to RKS – Republic of Kosovo.
After October 31, Kosovo has declared that these cars – which are estimated to be close to 10,000 – will not be allowed to circulate in the territory of the state, nor to cross the border.
The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, said on October 27 that when it comes to license plates, Kosovo is respecting the law and Sebia is threatening with illegal means.
