Share

In a remarkable celebration of Albania’s 112th Independence Day, the Albanian flag was proudly raised at Bowling Green in Lower Manhattan, an event hosted by the NYC Mayor’s Office alongside former Council Member Mark Gjonaj. This annual tradition drew dignitaries, including NYC Mayor Eric Adams, Albania’s Ambassador to the U.S. Ervin Bushati, and Kosovo’s Head of Mission in New York, Blerim Reka, among others.

This year, Vera Mjeku, Fadil Berisha, and Esad Gjonbalaj were honored for their outstanding contributions to the Albanian-American community. Attendees were treated to performances by the Ajkun Ballet Theater and witnessed the NYC Illyrian Society Color Guard, making the event even more special. Mayor Adams highlighted the symbolism of raising the Albanian flag alongside the American one, calling it a testament to the unity and pride of Albanian-Americans.

The ceremony, which began with an opening prayer by Imam Tahir Kukaj, celebrated the diaspora’s rich heritage and contributions. Later in the evening, a special reception was held to continue the festivities, further solidifying this day as a proud moment for the Albanian community in New York City.
