Albania takes over the Presidency of the UN Security Council on June 1st

June 11, 2021 was a historic date for Albania, following its accession as a temporary member of the UN Security Council.

A year later, exactly on June 1, 2022, Albania will hold the presidency of the Council for 30 days.

In New York, Prime Minister Edi Rama and Foreign Minister Olta Xhaçka will be in charge of the Security Council.

Another historic date for Albania that in these 12 months as a member of the council has raised the voice of strong argument against Russian brutality in Ukraine.

Although a small country, Albania has shown determination alongside the US in leading the council with several resolutions on Ukraine.

Albania’s ambassador to the UN, Ferit Hoxha, talked about the great responsibility and the privilege of Albania taking over the presidency of the Security Council.

Olta Xhaçka, head of Albanian diplomacy, says that with the presidency of the council, Albania will be at the forefront of diplomatic efforts to isolate Russia

Albania became a member of the UN on December 14, 1955, and after 66 years of membership, was voted for the first time as a member of the Security Council, which consists of 15 members, of which the United States, Great Britain, France, Russia and China are members. permanent while the other 10 member countries have a two-year term.
