The US Ambassador to Kosovo, Jeffrey Hovenier, reiterated the US position that an agreement on the normalization of relations should be reached in Brussels, which aims at mutual recognition.
In an interview with the Serbian media, Ambassador Hovenier stressed that his country strongly supports this process and will work with his partners to improve it.
Although he says that everything depends on the Prime Minister of Kosovo and the President of Serbia, Hovenier believes that such an agreement can be reached during the current term of the Prime Minister of Kosovo and the President of Serbia.
“There are difficult issues that have political costs. “Both sides will have to engage actively and creatively and with a certain urgency to achieve this,” the ambassador concluded.
Hovenier also spoke about the situation in northern Kosovo, saying that much has changed since his last visit to Mitrovica in 2007, when he worked for Martti Ahtisaari’s team.
He commented on the recent attacks on the Kosovo Police in the north, saying that the KP had assured him that it was “taking this issue very seriously”.
Hovenier visited North Mitrovica for the first time this week since being appointed US ambassador to Kosovo.
