Lindsay Johnston & Texas Students: A Demining Mission for Kosova

Share

In the bustling town of McKinney, Texas, the Imagine International Academy of North Texas (IIANT) stands as a testament to the transformative power of education and service. “The mission of the Imagine International Academy of North Texas is to cultivate future leaders passionate about making a positive contribution to their local and global communities,” explains Lindsey Johnston, the teacher spearheading the school’s partnership with HALO Trust.

At the heart of IIANT’s mission lies a commitment to international studies and humanitarian efforts. As an International Baccalaureate World School, the academy emphasizes service learning. “Facilitating service learning is an exceptionally important component of our student’s education,” Johnston says. This commitment led the Junior World Affairs Council (JWAC) to partner with HALO Trust, focusing on the removal of old land mines in Kosova. “When our JWAC first started working with HALO Trust, our students knew little about Kosova,” Johnston recalls. But this unfamiliarity transformed into a deep-rooted connection. “Over the years, this has changed, as our students are able to see the impact their actions have on the global community beyond their own backyard.”

The inspiration for this collaboration traces back to 2017. Arjun Dodanari, the President of JWAC, was exploring international service projects. “The previous summer I had watched a documentary on HALO Trust and their work in de-mining. I mentioned it to Arjun, who was immediately interested in the concept,” Johnston shares. Dodanari’s intrigue about the Balkans, combined with stories of a former student from Kosova, led to the selection of Kosova as the focal point for their efforts. “One of the strongest factors in Arjun’s selection of Kosova was the future potential for development,” Johnston adds.

The initiative has seen significant milestones. From hosting their inaugural fundraising dinner in May 2019, which raised a total of $10,000, to receiving a plaque of appreciation from Prime Minister Kurti in 2022, the students’ dedication has been recognized and celebrated. “Meeting with Prime Minister Kurti in May 2022 to receive a plaque of appreciation for our work was a huge milestone for our organization,” Johnston beams.

The upcoming 3rd annual dinner on April 4, 2024, is another anticipated event. “The objective of this dinner event is two-fold: to inform and teach our audience more about the challenges facing Kosova due to landmines, and to raise funds for HALO Trust,” Johnston details. The dinner, coinciding with International Landmine Awareness Day and Ramadan, will also serve as an interfaith Iftar celebration.

The success of this initiative owes much to the support of notable individuals. “Local business owner Doc Vranici deserves such a tremendous thank you! Without his help, our campaign would not enjoy the growth and success it has over the last four years,” Johnston acknowledges. The involvement of Gino Mulliqi, American Air Force war hero Scott O’Grady, and U.S. Representative Keith Self has also been instrumental in amplifying the cause.

Reflecting on the journey, Johnston shares a poignant memory: “Our students were all quick to note the emotions and passions of the Kosovar speakers. Their stories and the intensity of their emotion and love for Kosova made the students realize this is a cause greater than all of us.”

Looking ahead, IIANT’s horizon is filled with promise. “Currently we are planning two exchange trips to bring students from Ferizaj to McKinney, as well as to take our students to Pristina and Ferizaj,” Johnston reveals.

In a world where borders often divide, the students and faculty of Imagine International Academy of North Texas are proving that compassion, dedication, and a shared mission can bridge any gap.
