Today marks the 19th anniversary of the Beatification of Anjeze Gonxhe Bojaxhiu-Mother Teresa, the Albanian humanist who won the Nobel Peace Prize.
Gonxhe Bojaxhi (1910-1997) was born on August 27, 1910 in Skopje. In November 1928, when she was 18 years old, she entered the congregation “Sisters of Loreto” in Ireland where she took the name Mary Teresa in honor of Saint Teresa. On January 6, 1929, Mary Teresa went as a missionary to Calcutta, India. There he began teaching at St. Mary’s College for Girls. Maryderisa was appointed director in 1944. On August 17, 1948, she wore the white saree with blue sides for the first time and after completing a medical course with the Missionary Sisters in Patna, she returned to Calcutta. There he visited the slums, feeding the hungry and treating the sick. Immediately, many of the former students of the college began to gather around her.
In 1960 Mother Teresa’s sisters were spread all over India. While between the years 1980-1990, Mother Teresa opened mission houses in the countries of the socialist camp, including the Republics of the former Soviet Union, Cuba, Albania, etc. She has been awarded many prizes for her charity work, starting with the Indian Padmashri Award in 1962 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. In 1997, Mother Teresa had about 4,000 sisters who carried out the mission in 610 charity houses. in 123 countries of the world. She devoted her entire life to the poor and needy people until she passed away on September 5, 1997.
Not even two years after the saint’s death, Pope John Paul II allowed the canonization procedure to begin. Thus, on December 20, 2002, the decree for the miracles of the saint was approved. The date for Mother Teresa’s beatification ceremony was set to be October 19, 2003. This decision by Pope John Paul II came immediately after approval by the Congregation of the Holy See for Consecration Matters. Mother Teresa healed an Indian woman, whose name was Monika Bersa, who was suffering from a tumor. Mother Teresa’s beatification day coincided with the 25th anniversary of Pope John Paul II’s ascension to the Vatican throne.
On September 5, 2016, the consecration of Mother Teresa took place.
