The Kalush Orchestra, the Ukrainian band that won the competition for best song this year at Eurovision, has sold the trophy for US $ 900,000, to raise money for the war in Ukraine.
The crystal microphone was sold at a Facebook auction, with the aim of buying drones for the Ukrainian army.
Ukrainian presenter Serhiy Prytula has said the money raised from the trophy sale will be used to buy three Ukrainian PD-2 drones.
The trophy was sold the day the band appeared at a charity concert in Berlin, with the aim of raising money for healthcare and other supplies.
Speaking during the concert, group member Oleh Psiuk called on people not to get used to the war, which has left 4,031 people dead and over 4,730 injured, according to the United Nations.
The number of fighters killed is not yet known.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine – launched on February 24 – has prompted more than 14 million people to flee their homes as the towns are reduced to rubble.
“I think war should always be at the forefront, until we have peace,” Psiuk said.
