Former New York City Mayor Eric Adams has officially been granted Albanian citizenship, following a special decree issued today by Bajram Begaj.
According to the presidential decree, the decision is based on Law No. 113/2020, which allows the granting of Albanian citizenship under specific conditions. The decree states that Adams’ citizenship takes immediate effect and will be published in the Official Gazette. It also confirms that Adams has been issued an Albanian passport upon his own request.
The move marks an unusual and symbolic connection between the former mayor of New York City and Albania.
Adams had previously visited Albania in October 2025, where he met with Prime Minister Edi Rama. That visit appears to have strengthened ties, ultimately leading to his application for Albanian citizenship.
While no detailed explanation has been provided regarding the reasons behind the request, the decision is already drawing attention both in Albania and internationally.
