On March 30, 2025, a segment of Hylan Boulevard in Staten Island, New York, was ceremoniously co-named “Senad Demiri Way” in honor of the late Albanian-American activist and restaurateur. This tribute recognizes Demiri’s significant contributions to the local community and his enduring legacy.
Senad Demiri, originally from Montenegro, immigrated to the United States three decades ago. He established a successful family and business, notably founding the beloved “Latte” restaurant in Staten Island. Known for his dedication and hard work, Demiri became a respected figure within the community. Tragically, he passed away a year and a half ago after battling a terminal illness.
The initiative to co-name the street was spearheaded by community activist Naser Nika, who worked diligently to fulfill the family’s wish of commemorating Demiri’s life and contributions. Nika expressed his satisfaction, stating, “I am extremely happy for the achievements we are realizing in service to the Albanian community in America.” He emphasized that this accomplishment is part of a broader effort to honor Albanian heritage, with plans underway to co-name additional streets after notable Albanian figures such as Isa Boletini.
The ceremony, held on the auspicious occasion of Bajram, was attended by family, friends, and community members who gathered to celebrate Demiri’s legacy and the lasting impact he had on Staten Island. The co-naming of “Senad Demiri Way” serves as a testament to the profound influence one individual can have on their community and stands as an enduring tribute to Demiri’s life and work.
