A historic celebration took place in Philadelphia as a segment of Willits Road, was officially renamed “Gjergj Kastrioti Skenderbeu”. The intersection of Willits Road and Academy Road, a bustling area of the city, became a landmark of Albanian pride. The event drew a large crowd, including Albanian-Americans from Philadelphia, New Jersey, and other states, who gathered to honor Albania’s National Hero in a jubilant atmosphere filled with traditional songs and dances.
The initiative to rename the street was made possible by the efforts of the “Bijtë e Shqipes” Association, particularly its secretary, Julida Cepele, and Michael Driscoll, a Philadelphia City Council member. The unanimous approval by the City Council marked a significant moment for the community. Councilman Driscoll, along with other officials such as Patrick Gallagher of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, celebrated this milestone at the ceremony, which also featured speeches highlighting Skanderbeg’s legacy of freedom and independence.
The unveiling of the “Gjergj Kastrioti Skenderbeu” street sign was an emotional moment. Actor Xhevat Limani brought Skanderbeg’s persona to life, and the event concluded with performances by Albanian-American artists and students in traditional attire. This initiative is a lasting testament to the contributions of the Albanian-American community to Philadelphia’s cultural and historical fabric./Dielli
