The traditional dress of the Has region in Prizren—considered one of Kosovo’s most valuable ethnographic treasures and among the oldest Albanian garments—has officially begun the process of seeking protection under UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

The initiative to collect, document, and scientifically substantiate the uniqueness of this traditional attire has been launched by the Cultural Artistic Society “Malësori” in Prizren, aiming to highlight its authenticity, ancient origins, and rich symbolism.

According to researcher Nexhat Çoçaj, the Has traditional dress dates back more than 2,500 years, placing it among the oldest known Albanian garments. It is distinguished by its asymmetrical craftsmanship, intricate ornamentation, and symbolic elements that reflect the social, cultural, and spiritual life of the Has community.

The application process is being carried out in cooperation with the “Pjetër Bogdani” Institute for Heritage and Culture and the Cultural Society “Hasi” in Tirana. The official nomination dossier is expected to be submitted to UNESCO in April 2026.

So far, more than 150 complete Has traditional outfits have been identified in Kosovo and Albania, preserved and passed down through generations. These garments represent living evidence of Albanian cultural identity and continuity.
