In 2014, Montclair State University in New Jersey made history by launching the first-ever Albanian-Balkan Ensemble in the United States. Founded by Raif Hyseni, a renowned Kosovar musician, and his wife, famed Albanian singer Merita Halili, this ensemble introduced American students to the rich sounds of Albanian folk music. Over the past decade, this groundbreaking program has thrived, marking an incredible cultural milestone.
The ensemble was created as a bridge to Balkan music, especially Albanian traditions, allowing students to dive deep into unfamiliar musical territories. Under Hyseni’s leadership, the group has performed at prestigious venues like the Albanian Festival in New York and internationally at the University of Prishtina and in Ferizaj, Kosovo. This unique program has expanded the cultural horizons of both students and audiences alike.
Thanks to the support of Montclair faculty like Dr. Lisa DeLorenzo and other key figures, the program has not only survived but grown stronger over time. This decade-long journey has played a significant role in preserving and promoting Albanian music and culture in the American academic landscape, while also connecting students with their own roots and cultural histories.
