The Kosovar activist, Adelina Tershani, led the protest of activists against global warming, on Friday in Washington D.C., during the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. Among the demands of the activists are to stop the financing of fossil fuels and not to contribute directly or indirectly to the destruction of living spaces, where the activities take place.
There were participants from all over the world, the march was led by Adelina Tërshani, an activist from Kosovo. In a statement to KOHA.net, she said that the interventions of the WB in Kosovo should also be forwarded, “especially when it comes to activities that directly affect the lives of women and children”.
Tërshani was part of the delegation of the “Recourse” organization based in Amsterdam, which oversees international financial institutions.
“Recourse” was the co-organizer of the protest march, but also the coordinator of many bilateral meetings with members of the Board of Directors of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, as well as several discussion panels with environmental and social themes. Nezir Sinani, co-director of the organization, has said that the commitment of activists to hold global financial institutions accountable for their activities is vital.
“The annual meetings of the World Bank present a rare opportunity for global activists to have direct access to decision-makers at the highest levels of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank to address social and environmental issues,” she said.
The protest march in Washington DC this time targeted the World Bank since since 2015 when the Paris Climate Agreement was signed, it has invested almost 15 billion dollars in coal or gas based projects.
