The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has announced that an installation by the acclaimed artist Petrit Halilaj will be showcased in its Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden.
As part of the 2024 contemporary commissions, the Cantor Roof Garden Commission: Petrit Halilaj is scheduled to be open from April 29 to October 27, 2024.
This specific commission, the tenth in the series of site-specific installations for the outdoor space, will witness Halilaj transforming the museum’s rooftop with an expansive sculptural installation.
Petrit Halilaj’s work is deeply rooted in his biography, intricately connected to the history of the newly independent state of Kosovo (proclaimed in 2008). His life experiences during the conflict and war in the Balkan region in the 1990s, as a child refugee, profoundly influence his artistic expression.
Using art as a critical tool, Halilaj delves into issues of identity, displacement, the intersection of personal and global histories, and queer identities. The upcoming installation promises to be a thought-provoking exploration of these themes, providing visitors with a unique and immersive experience on the Cantor Roof Garden.
