In the vibrant narrative of the Albanian-American diaspora, the story of Djellza Pulatani stands as a remarkable testament to the power of resilience, advocacy, and cultural identity. Her journey from the historic city of Gjakovë in Kosova to the bustling streets of New York is a profound narrative of overcoming adversity and championing change. ATLANTIKU is proud to present an in-depth look into the life and work of this inspiring figure.
Djellza’s early life in Kosova set the stage for her future endeavors. The war-torn backdrop of her homeland and the subsequent move to the United States in 1998 marked a significant shift in her life. “My family’s journey led us to New York in 1998. Following the war, my father, a former UÇK soldier, joined my mother in the United States” she recounts, reflecting on the roots of her resilience and adaptability.
Growing up in New York, Djellza faced the challenge of balancing her Albanian heritage with her new American identity. “Raised on Long Island, I navigated the complexities of dual Albanian and American identities, spending summers in Kosova while receiving my education in New York.” she says, shedding light on the cultural dichotomy that shaped her early years. This unique experience of living between two worlds became a cornerstone of her personal and professional life.
Djellza’s commitment to human rights and female empowerment was ignited early on. Witnessing the patriarchal norms within her culture, she felt a deep responsibility to advocate for change. “Early on, I recognized the patriarchal norms entrenched in my culture, sparking a commitment to champion the rights of women and girls. Initiating my advocacy journey at the age of 13, I delved into human rights causes.” Djellza states, revealing the inception of her advocacy journey.
Her path led her to remarkable platforms, including the United Nations. “This experience ignited my passion for international politics. Upon commencing my college journey at Fordham University, I chose to major in International Studies and Theology” Djellza reflects on her participation in the Global Girls’ Panel of the She’s the First Organization. This pivotal moment not only fueled her passion but also influenced her academic pursuits at Fordham University, where she chose to major in International Studies and Theology.
The F’Oda Summit, Djellza’s brainchild, emerged from a deeply personal response to societal issues in Kosovo. “My initial foray into tangible activism involved organizing a rally in support of survivors of sexual violence following the assault of an 11-year-old in Prishtina by five men. Recognizing the community’s desire to help but lacking direction, I set out to lay the groundwork for what would become the F’Oda Summit—a girls’ empowerment initiative in Kosovo“ she explains. This event was a significant milestone, uniting a team of Albanian women to create an empowering platform for young girls.
The inaugural summit in Lipjan was a manifestation of Djellza’s vision. “Witnessing the impact of collective activism during the summit underscored the significance of my advocacy work” she shares, emphasizing the transformative power of the event. The summit served as a catalyst, inspiring over 80 girls from across Kosovo to engage in critical discussions about their futures and rights.
As Djellza looks to the future, her dedication to empowering the next generation remains steadfast. The planning of the second F’Oda Summit is underway, promising to be an even more impactful event. “We are diligently working to enhance the overall experience based on feedback from past participants. Scheduled for July 2024 in Lipjan, this year’s summit will span multiple days, focusing on girls’ empowerment, sexual education, the perception of women’s bodies, and empowering girls to steer their own destinies.” she asserts, demonstrating her commitment to growth and community engagement.
In her academic journey, Djellza’s pursuit of a Master’s Degree in International Politics is a testament to her dedication to affecting global change. “As I approach my undergraduate graduation this spring, my next endeavor is to pursue a Master’s Degree in International Politics, aiming to deepen my engagement in political activism and human rights advocacy” she affirms, signaling her unwavering commitment to her cause.
Djellza Pulatani’s narrative is not just a story of personal achievement but a beacon of hope and inspiration. Her journey from Gjakovë to New York and onto the global stage of advocacy symbolizes the strength and determination inherent in the Albanian-American community. As she continues her work, her voice resonates, encouraging and empowering others to join the movement towards a more equitable future.
