The tremendous increase in the number of young Albanians studying at universities in the Tri-State area, primarily in New York, has prompted the General Consulate of the Republic of Kosovo in the USA to support their initiatives. To this end, last Thursday, on July 6th, 2023, a preliminary meeting was held at the premises of the consulate, bringing together student boards from various universities in New York City, under the auspices of the General Consulate of the Republic of Kosovo.

Diplomat Fatmir Zajmi, in Temporary Charge d’Affaires – Chargé d’Affaires at the Consulate, told us, “The aim of this meeting was to create a joint initiative or a gathering for student groups to come together.” The diplomat from the Republic of Kosovo in New York explained that the first meeting was an honest discussion about the importance of establishing cooperation among students.

The roundtable meeting at the consulate was closely followed by Ms. Ana Mani, Executive Assistant to the Ambassador. Meanwhile, three student representatives from “Manhattan College Albanians” participated in the meeting: Eleni Mazija, Dejvi Hoxha, and Frenki-Samuel Lulgjuraj. Bekim Bruka, a student representative from “Columbia University Albanian Society,” who is also interning at the General Consulate of the Republic of Kosovo in New York, was also present. Additionally, two student representatives from the “Albanian Roots Club – Saint Francis College” attended the meeting: Jesika Hasankolli and Megi Rama, along with one student representative from the “Stony Brook University Albanian American Student Organization,” Alban Hyseni.

The next meeting is expected to take place before the November holidays.

The collaboration and enthusiasm demonstrated by Albanian students studying in the Tri-State area reflect their commitment to strengthening their community and heritage. By coming together and sharing their experiences, ideas, and aspirations, these students are creating a platform for mutual support and cooperation. The General Consulate of the Republic of Kosovo in New York plays a vital role in facilitating and encouraging such initiatives, promoting unity among Albanian students and fostering a sense of pride in their cultural identity.

The exponential growth of Albanian students in American universities is a testament to their determination and ambition to excel academically and make a positive impact in their respective fields. It is heartening to witness the strong bonds being formed among the younger generation, as they strive to preserve their heritage and contribute to their communities both in the United States and back home in Albania and Kosovo.

As the Albanian student community continues to flourish, it is essential for them to leverage their collective strength and actively engage with one another. By organizing regular meetings, workshops, and events, they can foster collaboration, support each other’s endeavors, and collectively address challenges and opportunities that come their way.

The efforts of the General Consulate of the Republic of Kosovo in supporting these initiatives deserve commendation. Their role as a facilitator and advocate for the Albanian student community is crucial in creating an inclusive environment that nurtures personal and professional growth.
