The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, remains the only European leader who has mentioned the necessity of visa liberalization for Kosovo.
Metsola before the start of the EU-Western Balkans Summit and after the end of the summit said that visas should be lifted for Kosovo.
“My position during the summit was clear, we want to see progress in the membership talks of Albania and Northern Macedonia. “I also mentioned the European Parliament’s long-standing stance on visa liberalization for Kosovo, this is the only country in the region that is not yet part of the Schengen area,” she said.
The EP President, even before the start of the Summit, also stated that visa liberalization for Kosovo must happen.
“Today is a historic day for two reasons; because this morning we will have a summit with the Western Balkans and I want to say a few words on behalf of the European Parliament. Enlargement has always been seen as a transformational process for countries that want to see Europe as their home, and today is the day when we really need to start membership negotiations for Albania and Northern Macedonia, we really need to talk about granting visa liberalization. for Kosovo. “These are the points that will be discussed within the summit, because this is the day when we should look to the Western Balkans as countries that are our neighbors and countries that should find themselves in the European Union, which is their home,” she said. in front of journalists.
Despite the support of the President of the European Parliament, the EU Council did not include visa liberalization for Kosovo in the Summit conclusions.
Today, the 27 EU leaders meet on the second day within the EU Council, where various issues will be discussed.
It is not known whether visa liberalization for Kosovo will be a topic at the meeting of EU leaders today.
