European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says member states face a “historic decision” at a summit on June 23rd and 24th, at which it will be decided whether to grant Ukraine membership status.
“I hope after 20 years, when we look back, we will be able to say that we did the right thing” Von der Leyen told reporters on his return from a visit to Kiev.
Von der Leyen had traveled to Kiev on Saturday to discuss with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, among other things, the remaining points in Ukraine’s application for membership, reports DPA.
The EU executive wants to publish its recommendation by the end of the week on whether the country, which has resisted a Russian occupation since February 24, should be granted EU candidate status.
Ukraine has achieved a lot in recent years, but much remains to be done, said Von der Leyen on his way back to Poland.
“Our recommendation will carefully reflect this” she added.
