French President Emmanuel Macron said Friday that Russian President Vladimir Putin had made “a historic and fundamental error” in deciding to invade Ukraine.
In an interview with French regional media, Macron noted that Putin had “isolated himself” and the rest of Russia as a result of the historic sanctions imposed by world leaders.
“I think, and I told him, that he made a historic and fundamental error for his people, for himself and for history,” Macron said, according to Agence France-Presse.
Macron, who spoke with Putin in a three-way call with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Saturday, reiterated his argument that Russia should not feel “humiliated … so that the day the fighting stops we can pave a way out through diplomatic means.” He again noted how Russia had isolated itself from the world.
“Isolating oneself is one thing, but being able to get out of it is a difficult path,” he said.
The French president said he has not ruled out a visit to Kyiv in the near future.
