The Government of Kosovo on Thursday, May 12, has approved in principle the initiative for the membership of the Republic of Kosovo in the Council of Europe. According to the announcement of the Government, with this decision the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora is obliged to develop all procedures for membership based on the legislation in force.
On March 16 this year, the Russian Federation was expelled from this Council, due to the start of unprovoked war in Ukraine.
In the absence of Russia, two thirds of the member states of this organization recognize the independence of Kosovo.
Given that decisions are made by majority, the possibility of Kosovo’s accession is real.
The Council of Europe is an international organization for human rights, democracy and the rule of law in Europe, based in Strasbourg, France.
It was founded in 1949.
The Council protects freedom of expression and the media, equality and minorities in the member states.
