Luhansk governor calls for more civilian evacuations

Share

More people need to be evacuated from the Luhansk region in eastern Ukraine amid increased Russian shelling, its governor said on Saturday.
Russian forces appear to be focusing their efforts on the south and east of the country after abandoning operations in the north. Luhansk Governor Serhiy Gaidai said that 30% of residents are still in towns and villages in his region and need to be offered an escape.

“They (Russia) are amassing forces for an offensive and we see the number of shelling has increased,” Mr Gaidai told public television.

Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said that 10 humanitarian corridors are being created for residents in besieged areas. It comes after a missile strike on a railway strike in the neighboring region of Donetsk that killed 52 people in the early hours of Saturday.
