The Albanian Coalition has won two seats in Serbia’s National Assembly, doubling Albanian representation in Belgrade, according to preliminary results from Sunday’s snap election.
The joint list, number 17 on the ballot, brought together eight Albanian parties from Preševo, Bujanovac and Medveđa. It won around 27,000 votes. Shaip Kamberi and Visar Mehmeti are set to take the two seats, up from a single Albanian MP in the last parliament. The coalition says it is still in the race for a third.
As a minority list, it did not need to pass the 3% threshold. Its seven-point plan includes Albanian representation in state institutions, economic recovery for the valley, and official use of the Albanian language and national symbols.
The same night, Aleksandar Vučić lost power after 14 years. The Student List, born out of nearly two years of protests after the Novi Sad canopy collapse that killed 16 people, won about 52% and a clear majority of around 139 of 250 seats. Vučić’s “United Serbia” fell to roughly 39% and 104 seats.
“It is clear that we have lost these elections,” Vučić admitted in a televised speech. He had resigned as president to run for prime minister.
His political career began in the regime of Slobodan Milošević, where he served as Minister of Information from 1998 to 2000, the years of the war in Kosova.
His longtime ally Ivica Dačić suffered an even harsher blow. Dačić, Milošević’s party spokesman throughout the 1990s, today leads the Socialist Party of Serbia, the party Milošević founded. His Socialist-led list fell below the 3% threshold and is out of parliament.
Turnout reached close to 70%, the highest since the breakup of Yugoslavia. Final results are expected after the official count and certification.
