A street near the Albanian Cultural Center–Struga in Riverdale, New Jersey, is expected to be named “Struga,” honoring the city and the Strugan community that has built deep roots in the United States.

The announcement came during a meeting between Riverdale Mayor Paul Carelli and Struga Mayor Mendi Qyra, who is currently visiting the United States.

Representatives of the Albanian Cultural Center–Struga, including President Sinan Alimi, Vice President Jeton Abdurramani, Secretary Fitni Istrefi and Director of Communications and Media Faton Arifi, also attended the meeting.

During the meeting, Qyra highlighted the role of the Strugan diaspora in strengthening ties between Struga and communities across the United States.

“Our diaspora is a bridge connecting our countries. Our relations with America are of particular importance, not only for economic reasons, but also politically and historically,” Qyra said.

Carelli also praised the relationship between Riverdale and the local Albanian community and expressed his willingness to visit Struga.

“I know Struga better now, a very beautiful city. We have very good relations with your people here,” Carelli said.

During their visit, the Struga delegation also viewed an authentic section of the steel structure from the former World Trade Center Twin Towers, preserved near the Riverdale municipal facilities.

The delegation paid tribute to the victims of the September 11 attacks and also honored Americans from Riverdale who lost their lives during World War I.

The proposed “Struga” street would serve as a symbol of the longstanding connection between Struga and its diaspora in the United States, as well as the relationship that has developed over the years between the Strugan community and local American institutions.

If approved and completed, the designation would add a visible reminder of Struga’s presence and heritage to the New Jersey community where many Strugans have made their home.
