An inspiring Albanian-American educator from Macomb County, Michigan, has just received the prestigious Excellence in Education award from the Michigan Lottery—shining a spotlight on her lifelong devotion to students and her powerful role in the community.

Lumturje Shuti, a lead Latchkey teacher at Pearl Lean Elementary School in Warren, has been recognized not just for her 30-year career in education, but for going above and beyond for her students every single day. Shuti’s award includes a $2,000 cash prize and a chance to win an additional $10,000 if selected as Educator of the Year later this year.

The Excellence in Education program, launched in 2014, honors public school educators across Michigan who exemplify excellence, dedication, leadership, and effectiveness in their schools. And this week, it was Shuti’s moment to shine.

Adding to the pride for the Albanian-American community, the award was presented by Michigan Lottery Commissioner Suzanna Shkreli—another proud Albanian-American making waves in the state. Shkreli praised Shuti’s deep compassion and commitment:

Shuti, who earned her associate’s degree from Macomb Community College, was inspired to become a teacher from a young age.

I’ve always loved children. I admired the way teachers were portrayed in movies and how they made a difference. That’s what I wanted to do.”

She was nominated for the award by a family member who highlighted her selfless acts—buying school supplies with her own money, staying late until every child is picked up, and serving as a trusted partner to busy parents. Shuti is known for her creativity, patience, and the way she builds meaningful bonds with both students and families.

Her dedication and impact have made her an irreplaceable part of Warren Consolidated Schools—and now, a proud representative of Albanian excellence in America.
