Albanian Bronx Food Pantry Calls for Refrigeration and AC Support

Share

The Albanian American Open Hand Association (AAOHA) food pantry in the Bronx serves over 500 families daily. Founded by Albanian-American Aleksander Nilaj in 2014, the nonprofit works tirelessly to combat food insecurity in the Pelham Parkway area. The hot summer months have intensified the struggle to keep perishable items fresh, creating an urgent need for a refrigerator, freezer, and air conditioning.

Despite large fans, the lack of air conditioning results in the spoilage of hundreds of dollars worth of fresh food each day. Volunteers, who work tirelessly in the heat, need a cooler environment to maintain their health and continue their essential work.

The community has rallied to support the pantry in the past. In February 2023, a mechanic repaired their delivery van, and a car dealership donated a new one. In January, the Ford Foundation, Circle of Generosity, and U.S. Rep. Ritchie Torres helped when the pantry was running out of food.

Now, the AAOHA food pantry calls on the community once more. With new refrigeration and air conditioning, the pantry can continue to serve as a vital resource for the Albanian-American and broader Bronx community. The pantry, located at 821 Lydig Avenue, symbolizes community solidarity and resilience.

Donations to support the pantry can be made directly to the organization. Your contribution will help provide the necessary equipment to preserve food and keep volunteers safe, ensuring no family in the community goes hungry. For more information and to donate, visit the AAOHA’s website or contact them directly.
