Mary Camaj, an Albanian-American, proudly graduated from Columbia University wearing traditional Albanian attire, symbolizing her deep connection to her heritage. During her graduation ceremony, Camaj donned the xhubleta, showcasing what it means to carry her homeland with her wherever she goes.

Completing both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Political Science at Columbia University, Camaj focused her academic research on the indigenous Albanian population in the Balkans. Her work aimed to introduce the Albanian perspective into academic discourse and reshape the narrative about the region.

Reflecting on her achievement, Camaj stated, “While I was born and raised in the United States, first and foremost, I am an Albanian woman, and my identity will always be at the core of what I do.” Her academic journey emphasizes the importance of embracing and celebrating one’s cultural heritage.
