Albanian-American photographer Lena Nikolaj has not only captured the world through her lens but also broken barriers, empowered women, and celebrated diversity through her work. In an interview with ATLANTIKU, Lena shared her journey, highlighting the influence of her cultural background on her photography and her commitment to supporting women entrepreneurs.
Growing up in a community where traditional expectations often confined women to specific roles, Lena found inspiration in breaking away from these norms. “The absence of female entrepreneur role models within my immediate surroundings pushed me to shape my own unique path” Lena explains. “The strength and resilience ingrained in Albanian culture became my guide during challenging times, shaping my perspective on success into one that reflects authenticity, determination, and commitment.”
Lena’s passion for supporting women entrepreneurs stems from her observations of women in her community. “Supporting women entrepreneurs is a passion deeply rooted in me” Lena shares. “I noticed that some women around me, who lacked entrepreneurial pursuits, often found themselves restricted in their lives.”
Through her photography, Lena aims to capture the strength and resilience of women entrepreneurs and encourage every woman to pursue her dreams. “Creating a narrative that celebrates diverse paths. Women deserve to define and pursue their own version of a fulfilling life” she says.
With an impressive portfolio that includes clients like Forbes, Dior, and Rachel Zoe, Lena has learned valuable lessons about the intersection of creativity and business in the photography industry. “Keeping a positive outlook, problem-solving, and staying resilient in such a competitive field is key to overcoming challenges and using creativity to drive business growth” Lena explains.
She emphasizes the importance of perseverance and learning from trial and error. “Rather than feeling resentful or victimized by setbacks, I’ve learned to problem-solve and adapt. This has contributed to my growth and success immensely” Lena adds.
Travel plays a significant role in Lena’s work, shaping her artistic vision and approach to photography. “Experiencing diverse cultures and environments made me more adaptable and culturally sensitive” she shares. “It’s taught me to approach photography with genuine curiosity and respect, allowing me to authentically capture the essence of each place and person I encounter.”
From being in front of the camera as a model to behind the camera as a photographer, Lena offers advice for individuals who may be shy or unsure about their presence in photographs. “For anyone feeling shy or uncertain about being in front of the camera, my advice is simply to have fun and be yourself” Lena advises.
She emphasizes the importance of feeling confident and comfortable during a photoshoot. “Take the time to prepare and dress in a way that reflects your elevated personality and brand” Lena says. “And make sure to genuinely connect with your photographer. Someone who can create a comfortable and enjoyable environment that allows your authentic self to shine through the lens.”
