The United States first opened the Office of the United States Intelligence Service in Kosovo in 1996. Between 1999 and 2008, the United States Office in Pristina acted as the diplomatic mission of the United States in Kosovo.

After the independence of Kosovo in 2008, the United States officially established diplomatic relations with Kosovo and the Office became an Embassy. In September 2012, the United States joined partners in the International Steering Group in recognizing the tremendous progress Kosovo had made, including supporting its commitments to implement the provisions contained in Special Envoy Ahtisaari’s plan and embodying these in the laws of Kosovo, thus declaring the end of supervised independence and the dissolution of the International Civilian Office.

Since 1999, the United States has contributed troops to the NATO-led Kosovo Force (KFOR), tasked with maintaining a peaceful and secure environment and freedom of movement for all citizens of Kosovo. The United States also contributed staff to the EU Rule of Law Mission (EULEX) since its establishment in 2008, marking the first time the United States participated in an EU Rule of Law Mission.
